Teresa Teng - The Angel Came Down to Earth

As all my friends know, Teresa Teng (traditional Chinese: 鄧麗君; pinyin: Dèng Lìjūn) is my favorite singer. But all westerners does not know this great Asian songstress yet, so let me introduce her in brief.

Teresa Teng (January 29, 1953 - May 8, 1995) was a Chinese pop singer from Taiwan, a huge superstar throughout East Asia. Nowadays her musical legacy is well-known around the world. She is often called the 'Asian Diva', which means a celebrated female singer or goddess.

During her long career (1967–1995), Teresa Teng sang more than 1000 songs not only in her native Mandarin but also in Taiwanese, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Indonesian, English, and maybe some other languages, too. She recorded over 100 albums. Teresa Teng died in 1995 at the age of 42 due to an asthma attack.

Some people are interested to know, was Teresa Teng Christian or Buddhist. She was born in a Buddhist family, so orginally she was a Buddhist. But she was baptised a Christian when she was still child or student. Teresa's first name comes from her Christian name. These facts told my Japanese friend Goemon-san. If you want to know more about Teresa's religion, and how she joined the Catholic Church, please click here.

Since March 2010 I have made 15 "fan-made music videos" of Teresa's songs and uploaded them on YouTube. By clicking here, you can find all these videos and many other great TT music videos as well (the name of my YouTube channel is Teisuka's New Place).

Open your heart, and listen to her warm and melodic music with deep and wise lyrics. Possibly Teresa's angelic voice echants and mesmerizing you, too. I wish you an enjoyable journey to the beautiful world of Teresa Teng!(^—^)

  3. Hi Teisuka,
Thank you for introducing our beloved Teresa Teng to Western audience. Your introduction was very well written, containing all the basic information about her. And you even shared a piece of her imformation that I did not know: her baptism and where her first name came from. Thank you for being such a dedicated fan of TT. Best wishes to you!

    1. Hi Bao,

Thank you always for your kind visit and tireless support, my friend. I really appreciate that. Yes, I wanted to write a short introduction for people who doesn't know Teresa Teng at all. For example, in my country Finland, Teresa Teng is almost unknown. It is shameful but true. Anyway, all my friends surely know who she is. Haha. :D Besides, I know 4 or 5 Finns on YouTube who really loves Teresa's songs.

Regarding Teresa's religion: I think it is the most unknown part to many people. Goemon-san told me those facts in 2010. He is a Roman Catholic Christian himself and also huge fan of Teresa.

The name Teresa (Theresa) comes from Greek, and it means "harvest". It is popular Roman Catholic name, because there are several Roman Catholic saints like Teresa of Ávila (one of my favorite mystic!), Thérèse of Lisieux and Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

Happy birthday to our heavenly Teresa, and blessings to you, my friend. :)

    1. Hi Peter,

Thanks for visiting my blog and your comment. How to fix your pinyin? Hmmmm... At least, I can give you one good link, the Pinyin converter. You can copy and paste Chinese characters, and this converter show you transliteration:

      http://www.pin1yin1.com/

It is a simple tool designed to help students of Mandarin Chinese. I hope this helps you. :)

  5. Hi Teisuka
Thank you for all your good work! I love Teresa! I was a Vietnamese immigrant from Vietnam to Hong Kong in the 70s and knew of Teresa. However, I was still young at the time and could not appreciate her as much as I do now. As a mater of fact, I just recently rediscover her a few years ago while going through a tough time of my life. Her music have helped me through many difficult moments. I hope others may find her music as soothing and healing as I have.
I also wanted to know if you have any of her Vietnamese recording. I could not find it any where.
    Thank you again!

    1. Hello, my friend.

Thank you very much for your nice comment. I am happy to hear that Teresa's music has helped you through many difficult moments during the tough times of your life. That is really great, and for me, it's easy to believe you. Because I have also found a "healing impact" in her music. It is truly pure and comforting, good for the soul!

I am sorry but I have no any Vietnamese recordings of Teresa. But I think you could find something from the YouTube... Just write the headwords Đặng Lệ Quân + Tiếng Việt, and go ahead. Maybe you can find some songs. I wish you good luck and all the best! :)

      Kindly,

  9. Hi Teisuka,

I'm David from Taiwan. I lived in the same city with Teresa, but I never met her in person. It's rare someone from Finland knows about Teresa. If you are Teresa's fan, you may try to visit Teresa Teng Memorial Park (She's buried there). It's a beautiful place, I visit that place last month.

  10. HI, I'm from USA and first heard Teresa Teng's music about 11 or 12 years ago. As of now I have over 300 of her songs and still have more and more that I need to find. I have songs of hers in Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, Japanese, English and Indonesian. I did hear some of her songs covered in Thai language, which was interesting, but again COVERS, not the queen herself. Yesterday my Thai neighbor was telling me that Teresa did some concerts in Thailand before and sang a couple of songs in Thai. Does anyone know if this is true? I could not find anything on google about any concert in Thailand with Teresa Teng or any songs of her singing Thai. @___@ But maybe she did some lesser known concerts here in Thailand and none of it got put onto an album. please help..
